Dealing With Outbursts
This is a special First Person Point of View post by one of our amazing personal caregivers, Angie D.
After my mother, whom I’m a paid caregiver for, had her first verbal meltdown I knew we had a problem. My mother is in the early stages of dementia. Sometimes, I can’t even recognize her, the feisty woman who made the best empanadas anyone has ever tasted turns into someone else who says things I’d never imagine in my wildest dreams saying. The first time she really let go with an angry string of curse words and vile comments, I was shocked speechless and driven nearly to tears. I had no idea how to cope with this new development in the disease that was slowly taking my mother from me.
